Course Description
Medical law concerns itself with the rights and duties of medical professionals and their patients. The focus of medical law is on confidentiality, negligence, medical malpractice and other torts related to medical treatment, along with criminal laws applicable to healthcare, and ethics. Laws are created to regulate human behavior for the benefit of society. In healthcare, laws are designed to prevent harm and protect the rights of patients and other individuals. Healthcare workers must follow a set of legal regulations and ethics. If there is a breach of these laws and someone is harmed as a result of that breach, the implications can be severe, including loss of license, financial penalties, and jail time.
Therefore, today’s healthcare professionals must not only have good clinical communication skills, but also understand the complex legal and regulatory systems which govern the standard of medical care delivered to patients. Unfortunately, there is very little training in a healthcare professionals’ curriculum on legal and ethical aspects of medicine.
The certificate course in medical law will provide the student with a broad overview of the legal framework governing the healthcare industry. Students will also gain an understanding of various ethical standards that need to be followed in different circumstances. Overall, the course will provide information on the three broad areas for medical practice, which include regulatory compliances, laws pertaining to the practice of medicine, and laws related to ethical conduct. The course will enable the students to face the legal, regulatory, and business challenges of modern medical practice.
