Course Description

According to the IDF Diabetes Atlas Eighth Edition (2017), there are approximately 73-million people with diabetes in India. Patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes are often admitted to a hospital, mostly for the treatment of conditions other than diabetes. Studies have indicated close to 25-30% of patients with diabetes had hospital admission in one year and those with higher glycated hemoglobin (A1C) had the highest risk for admission. Patients may also be admitted for diabetes-related indications such as uncontrolled hyperglycemia, diabetes chronic complications, hypoglycemia, or diabetes related emergencies such as ketoacidosis or hyperosmolar states.

The Fellowship in Hospital based Diabetes Management is a nine-months, full-time, clinical training course that will provide the student with the practical experience needed to manage diabetes patients in the hospital setting. The student will work under the guidance of Endocrinology and Internal medicine experts and assist them in the management of diabetes cases admitted in the hospital. The student will assist these consultants in the care process of patients admitted to medical wards of the hospital for management of diabetes, or diabetes patients admitted with inter-current illness, or for a procedure. In addition, you will learn how to treat hyperglycemia in critically ill patients, the perioperative management of diabetes, and the treatment of complications of the diabetes, such as diabetic ketoacidosis.

You will learn how to treat the metabolic abnormalities in diabetes, prevent adverse glycemic events (especially hypoglycemia), return the patient to a stable glycemic balance as quickly as possible, and ensure a smooth transition to outpatient care. The student may also get brief inter-disciplinary exposure in other areas relevant to diabetes such as foot clinics, nutrition, neurology, ophthalmology, and nephrology when patients with complications are managed in the hospital. On completing the 9-months training and final Viva examination, you will get the Fellowship in Hospital-based diabetes management certificate from Medvarsity and Apollo Hospitals Education and Research Foundation (AHERF).
